Travel E-Commerce Application
Framework
When compared to e-commerce applications
in the retail sector, travel industry
e-commerce sites must have some
unique features considering the
requirements of the site owners.
In travel industry, shopping decisions
is based on the compatibility of
the available services. Unlike the
shoppers in retail stores, travel
e-shoppers do not just browse through
products and buy the ones of their
choice. The shopping items have
to be complimentary of each other.
Rather than buying foodstuffs independently,
the travel shopper has to buy the
whole recipe at once, or construct
his/her own recipe. Hotel check-in
check-out dates should be consistent
with the flight schedule. Transfers
between the airport and the hotel
should also be available at the
given date and time. Sight seeing
tour schedules should not conflict,
etc.
Public face of a travel commerce
application is actually the tip
of the iceberg. Definition of services,
inventory management, customer databases,
payment monitoring are among the
functionalities that need to be
implemented on the admin site:
As an example the home pages of
public and admin sites of an application
are given below.

Another important aspect of the
travel industry is heavy data traffic
between the sellers and the suppliers.
Hotels should be contacted for room
availability and the room reservations,
airlines should be contacted for
flight schedules, availability and
booking. Same is true for all carriers
and service suppliers such as car
rentals. In order to provide accurate
information and avoid over bookings
or under bookings, effective communications
with each and very one of these
suppliers has to be established.
Intro
Solutions' Software development
efforts are currently concentrated
on building an application framework
for travel e-commerce applications.
Complex nature of travel e-commerce
requirements are met by the utilization
of component based methodologies.
The framework meets requirements
in three major fields. B2C layer
handles the sales of services to
the end users. B2B layer makes it
possible for the suppliers (airlines,
hotels, etc) to exchange data and
make transactions on line. The administration
layer meets the requirements of
the business processes of the specific
travel company. Data services of
propriety systems like Amadeus,
are used, while the user has the
ability to build up its own database
for limited amount of suppliers.
Exchange
of data with the third parties is
based on ebXML standards. Studies
of Open Travel Alliance (OTA) are
closely watched to incorporate the
outcomes to the framework. The travel
framework is designed and being
developed to be able to support
digital map providers such as Map
Quest and Map Point. Personalization
module of the framework keeps track
of user preferences while the biasing
module allows the query results
to be restructured based on the
site owner preferences. |
